Choosing a certification is often the hardest part of the whole process, harder than the studying itself for a lot of people. There are dozens of paths into networking, cybersecurity, and cloud computing, and picking the wrong one first can mean months of wasted effort before you land on something that actually fits your goals.

Foundational certifications for networking careers.
Cisco's CCNA is the foundational certification for most networking careers, covering routing, switching, IP connectivity, and core network security concepts. It is often the first serious technical certification people pursue when moving into IT, and it remains one of the most respected entry points into networking roles specifically.
Entry level and advanced security credentials.
The most widely recognized entry level cybersecurity certification, and often a required baseline for security roles in both private companies and government contracting positions. Security+ tends to be the certification employers look for first when screening candidates for junior security positions.
AWS, Azure, and cloud career paths.
The best starting point for anyone new to cloud computing, covering AWS fundamentals without requiring a deep technical background first. Many students use this as a launching point before moving into more advanced AWS certifications.
The most requested AWS certification among our students, covering how to design and deploy applications on AWS infrastructure in a way that is secure, cost effective, and resilient. This certification tends to open doors to cloud architecture and engineering roles specifically.
Coaching across the Azure certification tracks, from Azure Fundamentals through Administrator and Solutions Architect paths, for students whose target employers run on Microsoft's cloud ecosystem rather than AWS.
Competency based degree coaching.
WGU's competency based bachelor's program in cybersecurity lets motivated students move through coursework faster than a traditional semester structure allows, since progress is measured by demonstrated mastery rather than time spent in a classroom. We coach students through the material itself, not just exam cramming.
CompTIA Project+ and ITIL v4 Foundation round out our coaching for students focused on IT project and service management rather than a purely technical hands-on track. This is one of the most common situations we see, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. A career changer with no background often benefits from starting with CompTIA A+ or AWS Cloud Practitioner before moving into something more specialized. Someone already working in a help desk role might jump straight into CCNA or Security+ since they already have relevant hands on experience. Someone targeting a WGU degree needs an entirely different kind of planning, built around competency units and term structure rather than a single exam date.

A lot of students think of certifications as one and done, but most real career paths in IT involve stacking several certifications over time, each one building on the last. AWS Cloud Practitioner into Solutions Architect Associate is one of the most common progressions we coach. CompTIA Security+ into CySA+ or PenTest+ is another, for students moving deeper into cybersecurity specifically. Even CCNA frequently becomes a stepping stone toward more advanced Cisco certifications or a lateral move into cloud networking as careers evolve.
